We have over 50 children in our Church School, led by Jancee Marcone, the director of Christian Education. Dedicated teachers, teacher’s aides, and parent helpers help to bless one of the most important ministerial areas of our church.
A children’s service for the lower grades is held in a specially equipped chapel. The superintendent is responsible for the lesson and music each week. The lesson, which is usually taught in the form of a story, parallels the church seasons and Holy Days. On the first Sunday of each month and on special occasions (baptisms, awards, bishop’s visits, etc.), the children are brought into church for the Holy Eucharist. The upper grades (three through eight) are encouraged to attend church with their parents during the Eucharist portion of the service every week. The class length is generally between 45 and 90 minutes, depending upon the length of the adult service.
The wonderful children of Christ Church are an essential part of our special events. The nativity pageant last year was a joy, where children who have grown up in the church rose into the pulpit to narrate the story of Christmas, while the younger ones smiled and radiated as cows, sheep, shepherds, angels, magi, Mary and Joseph. Our children also shined in this year’s Yulefest, where a cast of sixty brought to life some early history and thought of Christ Church.
Our children, beginning with the fifth grade, are called upon to serve in all facets of parish life. They do so willingly, responsibly, and with tremendous enthusiasm. Their involvement includes social events, fellowship, worship, stewardship, and education. We cherish their presence in our parish, and will continue to support and enhance their involvement as they grow in service.
